Can you really prevent getting sick?

Article from Time magazine made me think. (http://www.time.com/time/magazine/0,9263,7601090622,00.html
)

Most people grew up with our mom's telling us, put on your coat or you
might get sick. We were also told to cover our mouth when we sneezed
and coughed to prevent "others" from getting sick. This was all that
I remember my parents telling me about any sort of disease
prevention. Most of our parents were really good taking care of us
after we got sick already. Not knocking my parents, they did a bang up
job on me. They, just like many parents just didn't know about
prevention aside from vaccinations. And the jury is still out on the
pro's and con's about those. So is there a natural way to prevent
illness? I think there is but I can't say for sure until I die from
either a crazy trapeze act or plain old old age.

My wife and her family are a rarity if you think about the general
population. She grew up on organic foods and taking good vitamins and
non toxic cleaning products. I didn't. I got my first education on
what living healthy was when I married into the Radtke clan.

No more bad allergies. No more asthma. No more huffing and puffing
as I bent over tying my shoes. I've gotten sick only once in the past
3 years even with me travelling all around the globe sometimes sitting
right next to someone coughing on me. I will say that I "almost" got
sick a few times after a sickly flight or a night out on the town
partying hard. But as soon as I could feel a slight scratchy throat
or a slight drip, I doubled up on my vitamins and prevented the cold
or flu from even happening. I almost feel bad for those little fellers
(the viruses I mean).

Although Healthcare has been a hot button in politics for years and
years, it seems like prevention is being talked about more and more
than ever before. But I say beware of those companies that are going
to make a quick buck off of this change in thnking. Many vitamins
and nutritional supplements don't contain what they say they do. Most
won't make it past stomach acid either. Invest and spend a couple
more bucks in good products now and prevent heart disease and other
chronic illnesses.

I'm doing my part to not end up in a hospital bed when I get older. I
want to live an active life where I don't need pills to combat side
effects of other pills that combat side effects of other pills.

But like I said, I guess I won't know for sure if these vitamins and
supplements my wife and I take will really prevent anything until we
die. But I'd rather take the advice of people who have used "good"
supplements for 30 years rather than rolling the dice.

besides, hospital beds are not that comfortable. and I doubt I would
end up next to Jack Nicholson who could pay for me doing my bucket list.

Green Street Fair, Buying Green in Michigan

May 1-3, 2009 was Plymouth, Michigan's 2nd annual Green Street Fair. The vendors crowded the streets around Kellogg Park displaying their wares and solutions for going green from energy solutions in the form of solar panels to eating green and using the VitaMix. (A high-powered blender to blend up fruits and veggies, making it easy and fun to eat Raw Food!) The streets were packed - which was a great thing! Its amazing when something (being Green in this case) becomes a trend! I'm excited that so many people understand and know that this is important. Each of us taking action, learning what makes a difference and taking it on, contributes to the whole. As our awareness as a community grows deeper, the market will respond and provide things for us that really make a difference for the environment. The shirts for the Green Street Fair declared, "You are a guest of Nature. BEHAVE." I bought one. :)

As I was walking the streets, I felt like I was not only surrounded by good products to choose from, but also good companies. There are 2 aspects to a product purchase that I really think about as a consumer. One is, what products do they have to offer? Are they good for me? Two, are they an socially responsible company? Do I want to support their ethics, philosophy and the work they do as a company? Because I am concerned about creating a healthy planet and a sustainable future, I think that second question is just as important! This is one of the reasons (among many) why I love Shaklee, and why I have a Shaklee business. I am proud of what we provide for people, but also who we are as a company.

Shaklee was the first company in the world to be climate neutral certified - meaning having a zero CO2 impact on the environment. Click here to learn about Shaklee's Environmental Leadership.

This whole blog post has actually got me thinking about how I could improve my own spending choices and continue to educate myself about the companies I buy products from. How do we know what they represent? They don't always tell us - but there are clues to look for. I especially like it when a company is up front with who they are and their practices. It means they aren't hiding anything!

Here is one of the pictures from our booth at the Green Street Fair. We had so much fun sharing about cool, easy ways to "Go Green", enjoying the sun, and connecting with the people of Southeast Michigan!

EX-CITE Traning this Weekend!

Shaklee EX-CITE training is taking place this weekend where you can get trained in the process of building an Executive Coordinator business in Shaklee.  I'm sure they're going to focus on the 15 month plan to get your business to Executive Coordinator which pays you about $35,000+ in bonuses.

That's it for now.  We're just so busy!!!!

My Favorite Lunch spot

If you travel to Holland, OH and you stop at Chipotle off Airport Rd, just ask for the Jerry Veggie Bowl. It's actually a Vegan bowl - rice, black beans, grilled onions and green peppers, tomato salsa, corn salsa, red chili salsa, lettuce, and guacamole.  It is enough for a "good full" feeling and it helps clean out your system.  I pretty much just eat for lunch unless I want a special treat of Chinese food for lunch down the street.

It's so hard to find alternatives for a quick lunch that are healthy.  Eating at restaurants are strewn with entrees in lunch portions that are still 1500+ calories on average making McDonalds or Wendys seem healthy.  Which is why I pretty much eat at Chipotle.

A Cinch shake or meal bar in the morning, and either another Cinch shake for lunch or a Jerry Vegan bowl for lunch, plus a nice light dinner makes for a good set of meals for the day.  Add in some bags of nuts and you're good to do day to day.

If you want meat, then definitely stick to the "bowl" version of the burrito.  It's a lot of food so try and just eat half and then take the rest home.  If you can polish off that bowl then you better bet ready to go for a healthy run that night and have an extra light dinner.

Do I get paid to plug Chipotle - I wish.  I eat there so much that I could be there version of Jared.  Except I don't walk there.  And I don't need to lose as much weight as he did.

Eating Healthy on the Go - AM Style

If you're like me, then most mornings you might be running around in the morning without much time to get the ever so important first meal of the day called Breakfast.  I'd love to be able to sit down with ample time to pour a bowl of cereal and enjoy a nice cup of coffee and read a paper.  However, that would mean that I would have also gotten ample sleep the night before starting at an ample time (that doesn't make sense I know).

So do I just skip the meal?  Heck no!  That would mean I would be overly hungry throughout the day and I'd have the afternoon energy crash and could possibly be extra cranky that day.

So how do I get my protein on the run?

Many mornings you can see me driving down M-14 nibbling away at a Shaklee Cinch Meal Bar (plug).  It has tons a protein and is a full meal replacement.  By the way, it's chocolate chip.

If I run out of these bars, and my darling doesn't order them in time, I like to go with a Cliff Bar as a meal replacement.  Those are great too, but pretty high in carbs.  You really want to make sure you're working out regularly if you're going to use Cliff Bars as meal replacements.

So that's how I Eat Healthy on the Go in the morning.  I eat a chocolate chip Shaklee Cinch Meal Bar (plug again).

Best Part is the clean up.  Toss the wrapper in the paper recycling bin - because Shaklee packages their stuff in recyclable stuff.  I just used "stuff" twice.  Ha.
